FAQs about Singing For Wellbeing Circles™

Are Singing For Wellbeing Circles™ for everyone?

Yes! We welcome all adults to be leaders of our Singing For Wellbeing Circles

Circles themselves are for any age and any life phase. When a new circle is started most are for all but some are aimed at specific groups of people to aim Circles at those in attendance. We encourage everyone to join in, there are no barriers to being a part of a circle. After a while with the circle established, those attending may change as life changes.

As a Singing For Wellbeing Circle leaders you decide what kind of group it is! You may wish to promote, that may even be an adult-only session, or for younger children and that’s fine too.

I already teach choirs & music. Won’t I be overqualified?

Not only will you learn a ton of new songs, but you’ll also explore how to integrate Singing For Wellbeing Circles frameworks into your practice. You’ll have the time and space to pause and reflect on your values and purpose as a singing leader and give some much needed attention to your own wellbeing.

Will I be given teaching resources?

Yes, you’ll receive a copy of the Singing For Wellbeing Songbook and our Leader Handbook. You’ll learn dozens of new songs during the training itself. The songs that our leaders share are varied and they tend to be songs that reflect the collective experience of those who attend the circles and also of other Singing For Wellbeing Circles Leaders. We encourage our leaders to sing what they love and whatever your flavour, you’ll find plenty of short versions of new and well-known pop songs to teach, by ear, specially created to be a simple harmony song. Usually this is done as a call and response style of learning so that anyone can sing the songs and you don’t need to be musical or be able to read music to take part!

New material is being written all the time and shared within the network. We supply a huge resource list of songs, so the problem won’t be that you don’t have enough since you will have so many to choose from.

Am I expected to start a Singing For Wellbeing Circle after the training?

Not at all. You might just want to take the learning back into your existing work or set up a group under your own branding and that’s fine too. We want as many people as possible to benefit from this work and we’re not precious about what it’s called. If you do want to join the movement and start a Singing For Wellbeing Circle in your community though then we will support you to do that every step of the way. We will list your group on our website – whatever you choose to call it, as a Singing For Wellbeing Circle after completing the training.

Are there any other costs after the training?

That’s up to you. Singing For Wellbeing Circles run a membership for our leaders that costs between £5 – 25 per month. Depending on what level of membership you choose, you will be offered invitations to free monthly song-sharing sessions, training and support, access to insurance for your groups, policies for EDI, anti-bullying and harassment, as well as procedures to help you safeguard and risk assess your work. You are under no obligation to join the membership and you won’t be pressured at all. It’s completely your call and we’ll support you on whatever path you take.

What if I’m not good enough to teach others?

Come. You’ll be in the company of others, also nervous, also uncertain. You are welcome and you’ll be a valued participant. The training is held in a way that promotes absolute inclusivity for all who have NO experience of this work. You won’t be exposed, ever. You will be guided until you are comfortable and ready to have a go. You will be encouraged and supported to find your courage.

At the very least, you will leave nourished, with new skills and ready to explore the possibility of sharing what you’ve learned with others. With terror and nerves around singing, you will be representative of many, many people. Nerves are perfectly normal (we all get them) but is something that this can help you to overcome and lead with confidence. Your desire to sing with others, step forward from this place and you will inspire so many others to do the same as you.

I already run a choir. What’s in this for me?

Singing For Wellbeing Circles are a chance to help focus on your wellbeing through singing without the traditional expectations of a choir. They are much more informal and better still they help everyone to have better wellbeing.

Singing For Wellbeing Circles are at the forefront of a developing cutting edge practice in the field.

By joining the movement you will gain passionate colleagues, the backing of a well respected network and the opportunity to influence others through the Singing For Wellbeing Network which can grow nationally and internationally to promote better wellbeing through sound and the voice.

Is this a franchise?

Absolutely not! We’re committed to improving the wellbeing of communities through singing. We don’t promote any set way of running groups or ask leaders to work in any fixed way. We trust in the unique skills and abilities of each of our leaders to deliver Singing For Wellbeing Circles in a way that works for their communities. We choose to come together under the Singing For Wellbeing Circles umbrella because we recognise the power of the collective, both to influence change and to offer support to the changemakers.

Do I have to run groups for free?

Not at all. Our group leaders can charge fees for their groups and earn a living from delivering this work. We help you to calculate the full cost of delivering the circles (including a leader’s admin time, prep time, training, travel expenses etc) at an appropriate hourly rate.

What about people who aren’t cisgender or are part of the LGBTQ+ community?

Singing For Wellbeing Circles are absolutely inclusive of any person regardless of their sexual orientation or their gender identity and we respect everyone’s right to attend as their true self. Whether trans, cisgender and people who identify as gender fluid or non-binary. All members of the LGBTQ+ community are welcome and the Singing For Wellbeing Circles logo is rainbow coloured to reflect the rich diversity of people without any discrimination to any circle. We want all of our circles to be a haven and safe space for all those attending.

Our focus is on improving people’s wellbeing and helping to address inequality   and all types of discrimination.

Step into your power and find your authentic voice. It’s your time.
